Next stop - Mount Etna

Once again, Tim went to the local pastry shop and picked up our requisite breakfast pastries - he always has a chocolate croissant and Marija has a different one each time - and then came back to make our lattes. We then walked around a bit and then waited for the bus for our trip to Mount Etna.

It was about an hour and a half drive out there. On the way up the driver showed us a house which had been destroyed during one eruption.

When we got there we suited up for a trek up the side of the volcano. We hadn’t really realized we had signed up for a trek but we were glad to get the exercise. Everyone was fitted for hiking boots, and a warm parka. Walking sticks were also available. It was interesting to walk on the lava field, noting the destruction which had taken place over the years by the multiple eruptions.

Part way through the walk it began to rain and by the time we got down - just over an hour - it was pouring. We went into a lodge for a hot lunch and then hopped back on the bus.

On the way down we counted over 60 hairpin curves on the road. It was quite a journey in and out!

When we returned we purchased a couple of cannoli - filled with ricotta cheese! Yummy.
