Final day in Malta

Just so we are clear, we really are on a holiday. Why do I say that? We have a saying that it is not really a holiday until Tim looses something. I forgot to let you know that very early in the trip Tim”s hat was swept off his head by the wind and it flew out of a castle window. Unfortunately, it was irretrievable. But still, a true indication of the fact that we were on holiday.

On our next day in Malta we took a Bolt to the fast ferry terminal to Gozo, an island off the north coast of Malta. We purchased tickets for a Hop-On/ Hop-Off double decker bus which cruised all over the island. When we saw something of interest we could hop off, look around, and wait for the next bus. Another small island, Camino, is home to the original Blue Lagoon.

Gozo is much slower paced. There are lots of little village with very narrow streets. As a result, the buses had to stop and wait for cars and, in the odd case that two buses met, one would need to back up to let the other one pass. Our first stop was at a classical Catholic Cathedral which had been the site of a miracle. Unfortunately, the building was not open but there were several stunning mosaics outside. (The temperature was about +40! Very hot.) We then drove through the countryside and stopped at the sea. The place had stunning views and is known for its snorkelling. The walking was fairly treacherous so we did not venture far.

Then back on the bus and back to a large village which had an old fortress built by the Knights of Malta. We walked around but neither it nor the church attached to it were open. Then we stopped in a larger centre where we ate lunch and discovered that there was a very large castle up a long hill. It had stunning views and was quite intact.

After a couple of hours in that centre, we took the bus back to the ferry terminal, back to Valetta where we stayed to watch the sun setting. We then took the bus back to Marsashlokk and enjoyed a meal along the waterfront. Lots of sea food of every shape and kind..We are loving it. Tomorrow is our last day!
